I have a very capable laptop (i7, NVIDIA GTX 1060, 12GB Ram) so it's not a lack of "oomph" to run Starry Night.Īlso SN is quite a large program, takes ages to load, uses quite a lot of PC resources, as opposed to (free) Stellarium, which is much less demanding on processing power, I can use it with my DELL XPS 13, which is a lighter machine for use in the field/garden/backyard, and looonger battery life.

I also noticed that in windows 10, SN runs in 32bits, whereas Stellarium and Cartes du Ciel have proper 64 bit versions, even though they are free programs. I have tested it on various PCs, maybe SN is more suited for Apple OS. but still has plenty of bugs, way too often I get a "does not respond" message on screen (need to restart the program). Starry Night is a great program, graphically, etc. I have Starry Night Pro 8.02 latest version, it does indeed connect and control the telescope through ASCOM CPWI, but I am not very happy with Starry Night as a "daily driver". In Guide 9, you select NexStar to make it work.

I am not that familiar with Stellarium but I am sure if you use "Direct through serial port" and keep the "" selection it should work. Switch to SN Pro and see the scope position if you have the need to see the scope mount position. Guide 9 does not show mount feedback position but has more data available. You can actually run all 3 software programs connected if you wish. I connect PHD2 for guiding, Starry Night Pro 7 or Guide 9 for object selection directly to CPWI in wireless or via USB to the mount. )Įdited by beammeup, 03 October 2019 - 09:07 AM.ĬPWI is the software equivalent to your hand control. The mount (target) position gets updated simultaneously on both programs (CPWI & Stellarium) You will need then to: start CPWI and connect to the mount (wirelessly or wired), align the telescope with CPWI, and then re-start Stellariumscope and Stellarium, in that order. There are a few (fairly easy) configuration steps necessary in Stellarium and StellariumScope, but after that it works very well (so far so good, still testing).ġ) In Stellarium: - plugins - telescope control - choose: control from "external software or a remote computer"Ģ) in StellariumScope: - in select mount - choose: - "ASCOM CPWI telescope", and then of course "update Stellarium configuration".

I have discovered by trial and error (I could not find any info on the internet/Cloudynights about Stellarium/CPWI combo usage), that it is possible to have both Stellarium AND CPWI running simultaneously on the PC, and to control the scope with either application.Ĭartes du ciel also works the same way, simultaneously with CPWI (after choosing the CPWI ascom driver option). Unfortunately it's not possible to align or control Starsense in Stellarium, or adjust the Celestron focus motor. and also clicking on an object and slewing (CTRL1). I also like the possibility in Stellarium of Syncing the scope to the target in the star map (CTRL 3). (ecliptic, labelling of various objects, etc,) I was previously occasionally using Stellarium to control the scope from the PC - I really like the UI (star map) and the various (many) configuration options.
I am now using CPWI almost exclusively to control my AVX mount with EDGE HD 8 (wirelessly).ĬPWI is great, easy and fast to setup.
